Online Users Hi! How are you? I'm great, thanks for asking! Oh me? My name is Claudia. Oh you know just ya know hanging around the internet looking, laughing, ranting about....well everything. Nice to meet you too! Stick around...let's see where we go from here! Should be fun!
False rape accusations are an anomaly.
True rape accusations are a norm.
You’re, quite literally, more likely to be killed by a comet than falsely accused of rape.
Re-blog now, read later.
"Because 1 in 33 men will be raped in his lifetime, men are 82,000x more likely to be raped than falsely accused of rape. It seems many of us would do well to pay more attention to how rape culture affects us all than be paranoid about false accusers.”
(spolier alert for those of you who haven’t seen True Blood)
Okay, so I usually enjoy io9’s tv recaps about true blood but for some reason or other Meredith Woerner’s got a real hate-on for Tara Thornton. Since like, season 1. And I just can’t fucking understand it. Tara has got to be one of the best, most interesting characters not just in True Blood, but in all of TV history.
Tara has been through some shit. Her mother has been emotionally and physically abusive throughout her life, the boy she was in love with never noticed her, she’s admitted to having low self-esteem and self-hatred (which how could you not growing up in the racist-ass south with all these shitty people?), she’s had to struggle her entire life with who she is and where she belongs. How could you blame her for acting out every now and again? AND LET’S NOT FORGET THE IMMENSE PSYCHOLOGICAL TRAUMA FROM SEASONS 3 AND 4 (i.e. the murder of her lover, the betrayal of someone she deeply trusted, her rape and psychological abuse).
FUCK, MAN. But Tara is not a tragic figure. She gets stronger, she comes to accept her bisexuality, she tries to confront the vile things done to her by vampires and humans around her. Also, Sookie? Really, sleeping with Eric after he kidnapped and tortured the cousin of your supposed best friend? REALLY? God, sookie is a really shitty friend. Am I saying that Tara is faultless? No. She’s made some mistakes. That’s why she’s so compelling and interesting. She’s not perfect. Some people have said she exemplifies the “angry black woman” trope, but I think she goes deeper than that. I think any female character who isn’t angry or hungry or fucking driven isn’t that great of a character.
And now we’re coming into season 5 and Tara has become the thing she hates most and I CANNOT FUCKING WAIT to see how vampire Tara deals with her new identity. I’m so fucking stoked for this. Because she has to deal with layers and layers of self-hatred and it is my one fucking wish that Tara gets a happy ending out of this or at least grows into herself. Also, I hope she fucking murders a bunch of white, racist assholes and kills all those who wronged her.
Basically, what I’m saying is if you don’t like Tara you need to do some deep soul-searching and look at your life and look at your choices and realize you’ve probably got some misogynistic, racist tendencies in there somewhere and you need to sort out your life. Because Tara Thornton is better than you AND your faves.

[TRIGGER WARNING for violence, sexual assault, torture and racism]
“Michael Phelps is kind of a dweeb,” Gawker wrote. “So it’s funny that he’s gone and done what so many newly-rich, videogame-anime-lady-obsessed nerds have done before him: he’s found himself an Asian girlfriend.”
In a link, Gawker then “outed” a list of other famous and very powerful Caucasian men romantically involved with women of Asian descent. The men - although widely perceived as Masters of the Universe — are mocked as “nerds.” But the truly troubling aspect of the Gawker story, and many of the discussion posts it spawned, is how they demean and commoditize all Asian women.
Reducing Asian women into a sexual object is not funny, it is not flattering. It is perilous[…]
In Spokane, Washington, two white men and a woman specifically hunted random Japanese women in an elaborately planned scheme to kidnap, rape, sodomize, torture and videotape them. Their motivation? According to police reports, the rapists had a sexual “fantasy” and “fixation” about young Japanese women, who they believed were “submissive.” (The very same beliefs so blatantly bandied about by Gawker and some of its readers.)
During a one month period in Autumn 2000, the predators abducted five Japanese exchange students, ranging from age 18 to 20. Motivated by their sexual biases about Asian women, all three used both their bodies and objects to repeatedly rape - vaginally, anally and orally — two of the young women over a seven hour ordeal.
In Spokane, one of the attackers immediately confessed to searching only for Japanese women to torture and rape — and eventually all pled guilty and were convicted. It clearly was a racially-motivated criminal case. The victims also believed they were attacked because of their race, the prosecutor told me.
What is astonishing, however, is that the district attorney failed to bring an additional charge that would have tagged the crimes as motivated by racial bias. The police also neglected to report the crime as a “hate crime,” as demanded by the Justice Department to keep accurate statistics of all bias-driven crimes[…]
We, as a society, were told that it’s not a hate crime to rape an Asian woman because of her race[…]
But in rapes and sexual assaults targeting Asian women, I can find no instance of prosecutors or police bringing “hate crime” charges
[…]Another stunning case of authorities failing to properly apply a “bias crime” label to race-based rapes took place in Los Angeles. In 2005, the LAPD arrested a serial rapist who explicitly only sought Asian-looking women, particularly Koreans, to rape, assault and rob. The man, who was not Asian, was charged with attacking seven women. But the violence extended to more: 13 known women were attacked, all Asian, and 11 of whom were of Korean descent. Police suspected more women were raped, but didn’t come forward.
…The attackers in the L.A. and Spokane rape cases did not use typical “hate speech.” But the biggest obstacle to bias crime charges in those cases is that society at large thinks it benign to hold sexualized stereotypes about Asian women.

And then there’s the rampant international trafficking and sex/rape tourism driven by white supremacist imperial actions and attitudes, but conveying that such a vast number of (non-white, non-Western) sex workers might be coerced by continuing legacies of racism and colonialism is totes propagating the slut-shaming radfem propaganda, amirite?
[ TW: Rape]
To all those who don’t think the rape joke was a problem, or rape jokes are a problem.
I get it, you’re a decent guy. I can even believe it. You’ve never raped anybody. You would NEVER rape anybody. You’re upset that all these feminists are trying to accuse you of doing something or connect you to doing something that, as far as you’re concerned, you’ve never done and would never condone.
And they’ve told you about triggers, and PTSD, and how one in six women is a survivor, and you get it. You do. But you can’t let every time someone gets all upset get in the way of you having a good time, right?
So fine. If all those arguments aren’t going anything for you, let me tell you this. And I tell you this because I genuinely believe you mean it when you say you don’t want to hurt anybody, and you don’t see the harm, and that it’s important to you to do your best to be a decent and good person. And I genuinely believe you when you say you would never associate with a rapist and you think rape really is a very bad thing.
Because this is why I refuse to take rape jokes sitting down-
6% of college age men, slightly over 1 in 20, will admit to raping someone in anonymous surveys, as long as the word “rape” isn’t used in the description of the act.
6% of Penny Arcade’s target demographic will admit to actually being rapists when asked.
A lot of people accuse feminists of thinking that all men are rapists. That’s not true. But do you know who think all men are rapists?
They really do. In psychological study, the profiling, the studies, it comes out again and again.
Virtually all rapists genuinely believe that all men rape, and other men just keep it hushed up better. And more, these people who really are rapists are constantly reaffirmed in their belief about the rest of mankind being rapists like them by things like rape jokes, that dismiss and normalize the idea of rape.
If one in twenty guys is a real and true rapist, and you have any amount of social activity with other guys like yourself, really cool guy, then it is almost a statistical certainty that one time hanging out with friends and their friends, playing Halo with a bunch of guys online, in a WoW guild, or elsewhere, you were talking to a rapist. Not your fault. You can’t tell a rapist apart any better than anyone else can. It’s not like they announce themselves.
But, here’s the thing. It’s very likely that in some of these interactions with these guys, at some point or another someone told a rape joke. You, decent guy that you are, understood that they didn’t mean it, and it was just a joke. And so you laughed.
And, decent guy who would never condone rape, who would step in and stop rape if he saw it, who understands that rape is awful and wrong and bad, when you laughed?
That rapist who was in the group with you, that rapist thought that you were on his side. That rapist knew that you were a rapist like him. And he felt validated, and he felt he was among his comrades.
You. The rapist’s comrade.
And if that doesn’t make you feel sick to your stomach, if that doesn’t make you want to throw up, if that doesn’t disturb you or bother you or make you feel like maybe you should at least consider not participating in that kind of humor anymore…
Well, maybe you aren’t as opposed to rapists as you claim.
there is a blog called rapeosexual.tumblr.com.

Emily Nagoski. no idea who she is, but i thank her. there is no excuse for rape and anyone who excuses it is insulting both the victim and the rapist. (via rapeisnotajoke)
